According to a recent National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) study, Millennials are valuing outdoor spaces, decks, and patios more than previous generations did. The study asked Millennials, Gen Xr’s, Baby Boomers, and seniors about their top ten must-have item when searching for a new home.
While all generations had features like a laundry room and exterior lighting on their lists, Millennials showed a clear trend of increasingly looking for functional outdoor spaces than those desires of other generations. Exterior lighting, patio, front porch, and outdoor deck spaces were all on the Millennials’ list. In contrast, Gen X’ers, Baby Boomers, and seniors consistently had energy-efficient appliances listed in their top-three most wanted features in their home, while those fell to #10 on the Millennials’ list.
This may be that Millennials are at the stage in life where they like to entertain, and outdoor living spaces provide them with the room they need without the expense of having to purchase a large home to accommodate their guests.
