The Deck Transformation

In this picture, our UglyDeck.com customer had a traditional wooden deck and staircase. While a common choice for homeowners, the original staircase and deck required frequent upkeep and limited the usable outdoor living space.
Here are some of the components that motivated and inspired our deck restoration:
Material Choice: The traditional wood decking and staircase material is an initially affordable option for homeowners. However, over time, it requires frequent sanding, treatment and sealants to maintain its integrity and durability and to prevent warping and buckling wood. For most homeowners, they would rather spend their time enjoying their space than maintaining it.
Underutilized Space: There is a large area below the second-story deck that was originally used for storage. Because the traditional staircase blocks a more than half of the space, the homeowners weren’t able to use this area as additional outdoor living space, as the staircase restricts the floor space, blocks views from the area, and darkens the space from getting natural light.
Lengthy Staircase: Because this is an upper-level deck, the homeowners require a staircase. This traditional staircase had a large footprint that took away from the amount of space the homeowners could utilize, obstructing views from the area below the deck and the lower-level windows and doors. The three large support posts under the platform of the stairwell also limited how the homeowners could use the lower space.
By refreshing their outdoor deck with the addition of a spiral staircase, we were able to update our client’s space, improve the views from their home, and make the most of the outdoor living space.

Updated Railing & Accessories: We added our stylish, maintenance-free Westbury Aluminum Riviera 2 railing style to the decking which refreshed the space and added a contemporary vibe to the deck. We also incorporated post-cap lights to the railings to brighten the outdoor deck and clearly define the entryway of the stairwell.
Additional Living Space: Opting for a deck with a spiral staircase, our homeowners were able to reclaim the space under their second-story deck. Requiring less of a footprint, the spiral staircase allowed us to create an entire second outdoor living area below the deck where we installed screen paneling, providing them with a new retreat that is bug free and shady.
