  • Defensive Decking: Tips to Help Your Deck Beat the Heat

By this point in the summer, it’s a safe bet that your outdoor deck has taken a beating. Severe weather, weeks of having guests over, outdoor entertaining, and just general wear and tear might have your deck looking dingy and drab.

The first step you should take to protect your deck from the summer’s heat is assessing its current condition. Check to see if boards are cracked or warped. Moisture from rain can cause wood planks to swell, while the hot sun can dry out boards and make them shrink causing severe cracking in the wood. The sun’s UV rays can also cause discoloration and speed up wear on your deck by breaking down wood fibers.

Another factor that could be harming your deck is direct exposure to sunlight. If your deck has no overhead covering, sunlight is more concentrated and can cause more damage to the flat surface.

Some of these things are inevitable with any outdoor space, but there are ways to prevent further damage and to bring your damaged deck back to life. Make sure to keep your deck clean, and tidy up any spills promptly. Occasionally, rotate where you keep your potted plants and be careful not to drag outdoor furniture across your deck to avoid scratches.

Though these tips can’t prevent all damage from Mother Nature, basic and regular maintenance will make it easier if you do need to have deck repair done. Having a clean deck is the first step for deck restoration!

So if rain and sun have damaged your deck this summer, the Minneapolis deck builders at UglyDeck.com can assess your deck and discuss whether deck repair or deck refinishing are good options.
